The diversification of the local economy is vital to the long-term economic health of the region and the self-sufficiency of the communities around our mines. Katanga’s activities are focused on improving the local skill base and creating sustainable employment opportunities, including offering alternatives to artisanal mining.

A key project is the revitalization of a 30-hectare farm being developed as a self-sustaining and independent cooperative. The farm is now producing a commercial crop of vegetables being sold throughout Kolwezi, including the catering companies serving Katanga’s construction camp. We provided the initial capital for this initiative and offer ongoing project management support. A second agricultural project has been established with ARDERI, a local non-governmental organization. This project focuses on a community farm, managed by women, who will also receive basic education.

In addition to a continuing focus on agricultural projects, in 2008 we will participate in an International Finance Corporation-backed study to identify local supply-chain options for mining companies in the region, with the aim of stimulating investment and job creation. This will complement our initiatives to provide support to small businesses in Kolwezi.
