Kamoto Drill Core Audit Confirms Copper and Cobalt Values
December 13, 2005
December 13, 2005 - Katanga Mining Limited (KAT.TSXV) (“Katanga”) announced today that a recently completed diamond-drill core audit showed excellent correlation to original assays that comprise the historic calculations for the resources and reserves held by Kamoto Copper Company SARL (“KCC”).
KCC is a Congolese joint venture company that was formed to hold the Kamoto Joint Venture mineral reserves, mining, milling, hydrometallurgical facilities and other assets that are subject to a joint venture between Kinross Forrest Limited and Gécamines, a Democratic Republic of Congo (“DRC”) state owned enterprise. The Kamoto Joint Venture relates to the rehabilitation of the mines and plants located at Kolwezi in the DRC. At its peak production in 1986, Gecamines produced 476,000 tonnes of copper and 14,500 tonnes of cobalt, the majority of which came from the Kolwezi operations. As described in a press release issued August 2, 2005, Katanga has the right to acquire 100% of Kinross Forrest Limited.
The audit program, which is part of the Kamoto Joint Venture feasibility study in progress, consisted of diamond-drill core samples selected from each resource area and from stratigraphic zones that are representative of the areas to be mined. Samples were prepared from the half core remaining after preparation of the original samples assayed by Gecamines. The work was carried out in accordance with National Policy 43-101 that addresses sample preparation, security, laboratory qualification and procedures. Assay results by SGS Lakefield Research Africa and comparisons to historic assays are shown on the following table.
