In addition to its key assets, Katanga has a number of other mines and plants that may be operated initially or at a later stage in the company’s development.
The open pit mine Mashamba East operated from 1985-1988, producing a total of 9.8 million tonnes of ore at an average grade of 4.96% copper and 0.35% cobalt. By 1998, the pit was allowed to flood due to a lack of funds. Mashamba East will form part of Katanga’s oxide production during later years; a dewatering schedule will be developed accordingly.
The Musonoie-T17 open pit mine is the initial oxide source for the mine complex. It is a new site, with no significant production history to date. Pre-stripping began in May 2007 and the first blast was fired at the end of September 2007.
Kananga is an open pit operation with a cobalt-rich ore body located five kilometers north of Kolwezi. It has no significant production history and operations have currently ceased.
